Looking north toward town of Waynesboro on west side of Blue Ridge, this small ridge is the old quarry. One counter set up at Waynesboro public park along South River directly west of “quarry” hill looking east toward the ridge. Beyond and just a little to left of quarry hill, the towers atop Bear Mountain were visible. The bulk of Broadwings followed along the ridge and it appears that they split to avoid the heavier cloud cover at the higher elevations over Afton. From Waynesboro looking east, at least 3 large kettles came off the ridge north of Bear Mountain, steering around the lower, denser cloud cover, and heading SSW between “quarry hill and base of Afton. Counter positioned at top of Afton ould NOT see these large kettles through the thin layer of grey mist. Now, from Afton looking North over Bear Mountain, a good number more, over 1,000 in late afternoon) flew south down along the ridge. These birds were not visible by the Waynesboro counter.
